New artificial reef in Paphos to boost diving

Diving in paphosIn order to boost diving tourism, first artificial reef in Paphos district has been created by sinking of an old wreck, the Laboe. Sinking of the boat, carried out under the EU guidelines, took place in Moulia area (Geroskipou) and was accompanied by a special celebration, attended by Nikos Kouyialis, Minister of Agriculture. The Laboe is a 25 meters long vessel, which was built before the World War II. It was bought from the Cyprus Ports Authority for €30.000 by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Paphos tourism development board with the EU funding 50 per cent of the cost. It is the third artificial reef created after Paralimni and Ayia Napa. It is the third artificial reef in Cyprus. The first two were created in Paralimni and Ayia Napa areas. Now Laboe is located 2 km at the 25 metres depth about 2 km from the coast. Before sinking it was carefully cleaned of any environment pollutants. An artificial reef is a human-made underwater structure, typically built to promote marine life in areas with a generally featureless bottom. Kouyialis said artificial reefs were part of the government`s strategy for marine growth both in terms of the environment and tourism.
